These
are difficult times for school communities as Wisconsin government
and local school boards struggle to maintain services with diminishing
resources. The tenacity and dedication with which Wisconsin teachers
continue to serve our young people in areas of art, music, physical
education, special education, school libraries, and the classroom
is remarkable.
Study upon study concludes that effective school libraries have
a direct impact on student achievement. Through early association
with books and reading our children practice becoming lifelong
learners. The formation of well adapted, functioning citizens, who
make significant contributions to society begins at home and in
our schools. Never, in the history of the United States, have people
been as concerned about literacy and student achievement. Unfortunately,
some Wisconsin school communities have already lost professionally
staffed school library programs. Take some time to review the Wisconsin study below. We need professional librarians in our schools and puplic libraries more than ever. They are our human search engines.
